Gary Gibson - Lists of Chalcid Taxa in the CNC
spacerGray

The Canadian National Collection of Chalcidoidea is one of the foremost international research collections for chalcid parasitic wasps. Worldwide, it currently consists of 39 cabinets or about 1,130 drawers of pinned material, plus additional ethanol-preserved and slide-mounted specimens. The number of identified genera in the pinned collection as of the end of 2007 is summarized below in Fig. 1, tabulated for each of the 19 chalcid families by biogeographic region, as well as for Canada and USA, compared to the number of valid world genera recognized by Noyes (2003). Fig. 2 below provides the same data for species. These summaries are based on a recent survey of the pinned collection where all species, genera and higher taxa in each family were databased relative to whether the CNC has specimens from any of the six biogeographic regions (Nearctic, Neotropical, Palaearctic, Afrotropical, Oriental, Australasian), USA, Canada, the provinces/territories of Canada, and Alaska and Greenland. These taxonomic/spatial lists of the chalcid taxa contained in the CNC pinned collection can be accessed below either through Excel or Adobe PDF files. In the future, we intend to expand the lists and their accuracy by including taxa contained in the slide and type collections. Sarazin (1987) previously catalogued the CNC primary types, but this is now 20 years out of date. The most significant value of the CNC chalcid collection for research is the comparatively large amount of material identified only to genus or even higher level. In order to assist those wishing to borrow material for research, we also plan to provide information concerning the approximate number of specimens of each taxon for each biogeographic region.
